Luther Decade in Wittenberg
Theme years from 2008-2017
Since 2008, the Luther Decade is being celebrated at Wittenberg meaning the ten years preceding the 500th anniversary of the day of Luther's posting of his theses.
On October 31st in 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the All Saints' Church in Wittenberg to protest against the misuse of the selling of indulgences. In doing so, he started a worldwide Reformation which ignited a change in the people's way of thinking not only in the field of theology, but also in politics, arts and culture, as well as in social life. Each year of the Luther Decade, one particular aspect of the Reformation is celebrated in terms of numerous events, exhibitions, conventions, as well as art and musical performances. These include, among others, a historic market, theatrical performances, lectures, disputations and exquisite Renaissance concerts.
In addition, visitors are given the opportunity to visit the historic venues of the Reformation such as the All Saint's Church or the Lutherhaus which is the world's largest museum for the history of the Reformation. Staying at the Luther-Hotel you will reach the locations of the Reformation within only a few minutes. Since the beginning of Luther Decade, there have been the year of "Reformation and denomination", the year of "Reformation and education", the year of "Reformation and freedom" and the year of "Reformation and music". In 2017, the grand Luther anniversary will be celebrated in the form of a multitude of church services and events held not only in Wittenberg, but also throughout Germany, and even all over the world.
